Noreen Firearms BN36: AR Action, Long Range Power

Burnout.  It happens to the best of us.  See enough of any thing, and eventually, you may not want to look at anything that looks like something you think you’ve already seen.  Lots and lots of companies make what some companies are now calling modern sporting rifles in the AR-15 pattern, and as you can expect from the world’s largest shooting industry show, SHOT was packed with them.  I’d seen seemingly countless AR-15 MSRs on Thursday, and barely spared a glance when I was walking by yet another booth with AR-15 style rifles and some distance guns.  It was lunchtime, I was tired, and my eyes were glazing over a bit. Then a lovely young lady practically grabbed me, and asked if she could sign a poster for me.  Well, sure, I need a … Read entire article »

Kahr Arms

Kahr Arms

Kahr made its reputation building small, high quality double-action-only handguns.  Kahr introduced its P380 several years ago, and it has seemed to usually get good reviews, but it is one of the pricier small DOA .380s.   I have been wanting to shoot a Kahr P380 for some time, and I was delighted to finally get the chance on Press Day.  What I did not immediately realize was that I was shooting the new CW380, … Read entire article »

Pelican: Defining Tough

Pelican: Defining Tough

Pelican makes tough stuff for emergency responders, soldiers, and people who just need hardworking tools.  Their cases are the industry standard for protecting equipment in harsh environments, and they have made terrific waterproof lights for years. One of my first really high quality lights was a Pelican Stealthlight, some 19 years ago, and I have since given friends Pelican lights as gifts.  Even their tiny L1 LED I have used and gifted to first responder … Read entire article »

Pistol Caliber Carbines: Thureon Defense

Pistol Caliber Carbines: Thureon Defense

One of the main problems with pistol caliber AR-15 rifles is that the 5.56x45mm/.223 cartridge is much longer than even the 10mm, the longest of the common handgun cartridges one can find the AR-15 chambered in.  Handgun magazines are much shorter than AR-15 magazines, so pistol calibers on standard AR-15 receivers must either use magazines modified with an extension to fit the AR-15 magazine well, or the actual mag well must have a block installed … Read entire article »

The Smith and Wesson Booth

The Smith and Wesson Booth

Smith & Wesson was focusing on some performance center models and some new .308 AR pattern rifles: PC 1911 This is a Scandium Commander that the S&W’s Performance Center has put its hands on.  Each slide is mated to the frame, and the modifications shown here are performed.  The best part is that the S&W rep priced this at around $1,500.  Not bad at all. M&P 9/40 Pro Series Core We saw and shot these during Media Day at … Read entire article »

Pocket Hunter- Beeman Precision Scores a Home Run

Pocket Hunter- Beeman Precision Scores a Home Run

Have you ever looked for something and found something else really, really neat instead?  That happened to me yesterday.  I was heading towards Savage, but saw a product in the adjoining booth that was so incredibly innovative, that I had to stop and learn everything I could about it. Bowhunting is a popular sport in the United States, however, bowhunting usually takes a fairly serious investment to assemble all the paraphernalia needed for practical hunting.  “Wrist … Read entire article »

New Products from Ruger

New Products from Ruger

Ruger’s booth was full of new products.  Here’s the quick and dirty: Pistols   New Steel 1911 Commander I asked about this, and apparently a steel commander was what the market wanted.  I prefer aluminum frames myself, but I’m always thrilled to see more 1911’s on the market. MSRP is $829, so this is looking very affordable as well. SR45 Striker fired, 10 round magazines, ambi safety, ambi mag release, rail, and a reversible backstrap so the buyer can choose whether the … Read entire article »

The Bushnell Booth: So Much New Stuff

The Bushnell Booth: So Much New Stuff

I walked into the booth not knowing much about Bushnell.  They’re sold at Wal-Mart so I have always assumed Bushnell was a lower tier brand, but after borrowing a pair of laser range-finding binoculars at a class last year and being impressed with their performance (if not with the image quality) I wanted to learn more about the product line. So I went by the Bushnell product booth, learned that they have over 130 new SKUs … Read entire article »

The Kimber Booth

Lots of cool stuff from Kimber. I’t like to start with a comment regarding the Solo pistols.  Lots of the reports on THR have mentioned that Solos needed to go back for warranty work before they fed well.  After talking to Kimber about this (apparently I struck a nerve) I learned the following about this problem: They don’t view it as a problem. The problem can’t be replicated on the returned pistols. The Solo was designed to function well on full-power ammunition.  In the process of shaving every fraction of an inch on the design they made decisions that pretty much require full power ammo to cycle properly.  If you shoot 115gr ammunition in spite of what the owner’s manual tells you, then you might run into problems.  This is a failure to follow … Read entire article »

SIG-SAUER Conquers the World

SIG-SAUER Conquers the World

SIG-Sauer was packed with numerous innovative products this year. Sig is known as a higher-end maker, and their firearms are not inexpensive, but some of the innovations they are introducing are surprisingly economical. Unlike another well-known tactical manufacturer beloved by the movie and video game industries, [cough] HK! [/cough] Sig is happy to sell to lawful civilian, non-law enforcement individuals. Some of the many products from SIG: the P226 will be available in a SAO model … Read entire article »
