Affordable and well-made steel targets
You might have seen a thread I started on THR recently re: shooting steel targets safely. This was one of the questions I was really trying to settle at SHOT: who makes good, safe, affordable steel targets?
I found my answer on the first day.
Action targets provided the steel targets we were shooting at the range on almost every station, and the targets held up quite well. This dueling tree (above) retails for less than $400, so pricing is more than reasonable as well.
These were being shot on nearly every range by everything from .380 ACP to .223 Remington. I saw no failures of any kind, and the angle of the targets seems to make them quite safe (for steel, anyway.)
This is a product that Action Targets resells, but these self-healing targets report hits, and the counter maintains a count of each target’s total hits until reset. Looks like a great tool for competitions. My memory of pricing is imperfect, so hopefully Chris Rhines will step up. Replacement self-healing targets (which have a claimed life of ~ 5,000 rounds) cost $45.
More targets are available as well:

Additional target types. The silhouette with the single popper seemed to draw a lot of fire from the crowd (in a good way). When testing handguns I saw Chris use it as a target, popping it back and forth about once a second.
I’ll report more on this tomorrow, as I will go back by the booth to take advantage of some SHOT specials.
